Many of you know that I am approaching surgery next week, so sharing these items for after hysterectomy should come as no surprise. However, you may not know that I have contracted to share a sponsored post with you about Depends Silhouette Active Fit Briefs. Why is this significant with this post? Because I never thought I could honestly share a reason to buy them until now. In fact, they are one of the first things on my must haves list and I am actually happy to share reasons why.
At 33 years old I never imagined I would have a hysterectomy and be looking at menopause. However, life and illness have a way of taking some things end up being the best possible choice for your health. I didn't think I would have major back surgery at 32, but I did and am much healthier and happier because of it. One thing I learned fast, though, after my back surgery, was how important incontinence protection is. Bladder leakage was no longer something that happened only when you are older. Post-surgery last year I was faced with a whole new level of struggles when it came not wetting my pants.
Why? Because post-surgery your body goes through a lot of changes. If you had a catheter during surgery, your ability to hold in urine can be much less. Your body is also a lot slower and in a lot more pain than normal. So, as you think you need to use the bathroom, it may take you two to three times the amount of time than normal to get up and make it to the bathroom. What happens when you wait a little too long? You end up with some bladder leakage. That is why I can say with certainty that having something on hand to protect you post-surgery is seriously a necessity. This year, I won't be caught off guard. I already have my Depends Silhouette Active Fit Briefs packed and ready.
Must Have Items For After Hysterectomy Surgery
Incontinence Protection: I've already shared some of the reasons for this, but I'll share again. Post surgery you will likely not only find holding urine in a bit more difficult as the muscles and post-catheter strength of your pelvic floor won't be as they were before. You'll also be moving a lot slower for a few days, so getting to the bathroom on time could be a real issue. The reason the Depends Silhouette Active Fit Briefs are a good choice is because they are low-rise and won't rub against incisions around your navel like other undergarments and products would. It's also really cool that this brand, in particular, is working hard to remove the stigma of light bladder leakage with their #Underwareness movement. Nobody should be embarrassed by physical symptoms beyond their control.
Plenty of liquids to stay hydrated: Water is the best, but things like cranberry juice are also recommended. Even though you will be pumped full of fluids during surgery, the pain medications and antibiotics you may be given post-surgery can really zap your body. You'll need even more fluids to keep you body hydrated. Bottled water is convenient and easy to have extra near your bedside. Cranberry juice a few times a day is a great way to ward of UTI's, but make sure you are drinking pure and not the sugar-laden varieties.
Your favorite snacks for medication times. Pain medications will be a must for at least a few days post-surgery and if you are like me, they can make you really nauseated if you don't eat with them. Since you may need them between meals at times, it's important to have easy to eat snacks on hand. I prefer apples, bananas, cereal bars or peanut butter and fruit. In fact, last year post-surgery I kept a bottle of water, banana and cereal bar on my bedside table at all times so if I woke up in the middle of the night needing medication I could just grab a snack, the medication and water right there without waking my Beau.
Something to occupy your mind during recovery. For at least a few days after hysterectomy, you will need to lay still and rest. You will likely sleep a lot the first day or two, but after that, you'll still need to rest but may be awake and bored. There are a lot of great things to occupy your time. Television and movies are always options, as are card games with your kids, reading a book (I chose one about menopause) and adult coloring books or magazines. If you like to knit or crochet, this could be a great time to do that as well.
Stool softeners for at least a week or two post-surgery. After hysterectomy, you'll find a lot of everyday tasks won't be as simple as they use to be. Remember that even if you have this done laparoscopically, it is still a very invasive surgery. That means your pelvic muscles will be sore, as well as the fact that you will have some internal and potentially external stitches to protect. Straining for a bowel movement can not only be painful, but could cause tears or rips that would lead to infection or potentially additional surgery for repair. Stool softeners (Colace) once or twice a day are one of the best ways to make your bowel movements post-surgery easy to manage.
Pillow for your tummy. I didn't need this with my back surgery, but I have been warned by many friends who have had the same surgery I am having that this is super helpful after hysterectomy. A pillow to hold against your tummy when you cough, sneeze, or even have to ride in the car can protect incisions and help you brace those muscles to minimize the pain. I love my travel neck pillow since it is small, convenient and fits easily between my stomach and the seat belt in our car.
Post-surgery meals and household help. You will be ordered to not drive for a few days post-surgery, but most doctors will also tell you that you don't need to be up and down, lifting or preparing meals or doing housework for a few weeks. Prepare in advance with some freezer meals, or ask someone to be there to help you after hysterectomy surgery. If your spouse has any paid time off, you will want them there at least for the first few days. After that, depending on the age of your children and whether you had a traditional abdominal hysterectomy or laparoscopic surgery you may still need help at home. You may be okay at home alone for awhile, but if you need to pick up kids or prepare meals you will need help or to have as much prepped in advance as possible.
These are what I feel are the must-haves for after hysterectomy surgery. I am sure I will find out a few of the things as I recover next month from my own surgery. One thing I know for sure is that I won't be worried about incontinence protection when I have the sleek and comfortable Depends Silhouette Active Fit Briefs on hand.
Right now, Depend is bringing #Underwareness to everyone. Nobody should feel ashamed of light bladder leakage. Especially when this is a physical symptom beyond their control. For every picture or video shared on social media using #Underwareness and featuring Depend products the brand will donate $1 up to $3,000,000. This campaign will raise money to be donated to charities that advance research and education regarding bladder leakage. To support the cause and get a free sample of Depend Silhouette Active Fit you just need to follow the link to Underwareness.com

Well I had the same surgery and laying low is not what you'll be doing they get you up the next day walking..Good Luck!
Katie
I was actually home within 2 hours of surgery. You do have to get up and walk around a bit, but resting is the biggest part of your post-surgery recovery. 🙂
Heather
Wondering what method of surgery you had? Vaginal, Laparoscopically. or Abdominal?
My understanding is may be sent home next day with vaginal or laparoscope but abdominal here for me will be a minimum 2 night stay.
Any recovery tips you can think of to share?
Thanks! Heather
Scheduled surgery: Dec 10, 2019 total hysterectomy, abdominally
Dawn
Gas X, they blow you up with gas to expand your abdomen. That gas gets trapped when they close up. They will only give you gas x 2 x a day. Get your own box and take with you. Keep it hid use as you need it and walk as much as possible to move the gas out. Spandexes you will need them. Good luck you will feel so muck better when it’s done. I was 32. undies works great to help brace and hold your abdomen get som

Hello,
I am facing an abdominal hysterectomy in November. I was wondering how your surgery and recovery time was. Thanks! Rebecca
Shawnette
I literally had my surgery 3 days ago laparoscopic surgery for a hysterectomy and I stayed 24 hours after. In alot of pain though more than I ever expected.
Lauren
I just had abdominal hysterectomy on the 4th it’s now November 11, one week after. Yes they got me up next day. I can’t wait till I’m totally recovered and hope a lot of this pain goes away. Was at emergency room last evening after seeing a lot of blood when I went to bathroom. I get the feeling every time I go to the doctors lately for anything that they think I’m having anxiety and that maybe I didn’t need to call them. The blood I saw was not spotting it was a lot and from my rectum. Never happened before to me. I called and they told me go to
Emergency room . I get there and my heart rate is up which I didn’t know nor could I tell. I just felt drained when I stood up. They first attributes that to white coat syndrome when I told
Them I was calm wasn’t nervous. At the end turns out I was Dehydrated and once they gave me fluids the heart rate came down to normal. I just feel my I’m
Not taking seriously when I who don’t like going to the doctors have an issue that is clearly not a normal happening.
Katie Hale
I am sorry you are not being taken seriously. Do take things slowly and don't let them ignore you when issues happen.

I had a total robotic hysterectomy, 6 weeks ago, everything went fine, only one thing went wrong. I got UTI 11 days later, and first urine test an culture came back negative, two weeks after that, I had another urine test an another culture and came back positive. They gave me antibiotics and I haven't get rid of this painfull situation, I'm tired at this burning sensation. I finished the antibiotics yesterday and it got a little better, but not a100%.
Katie
I didn't have any issues with that this time, but the last surgery I had (back surgery) it took awhile for me to get my bladder back on track. I am so sorry! I hope you can get it handled and get back to normal soon!
Josephine
Why the depends? You just don't make it in time or you don't feel the urge?
Katie
It is twofold. For some post-surgery there is bleeding/spotting. They make it a bit easier to keep clean if you don't have/want maxi pads. Secondly, it is more about post surgery difficulty getting up and down and making it to the bathroom in time. Depending on incisions and comfort, you may struggle to get up fast enough. It's just precautionary and makes it easier/less mess the first few days.
Cindy Kuhns
I have a robotic hysterectomy on Halloween in a week or so and about 6 weeks later I will be Having an L5-S1 disc replacement. Anyone else have this or something g like it? They will be going anterior through the same area.
Gina
Omg I’m having a full hysterectomy next week and my second cervical disk replacement surgery after that!! How was you recovery?? I’m really nervous!!
Beck Dodds
I had a laproscopic procedure and they told my husband that my endometriosis had made a web of scar tissue around ovaries, bladder, and intestines. They had to cut tissue off the organs and now my bladder is always aching and it hurts to be. I bet I have a UTI or bladder infection because this pain is awful even with pain meds.
Isabel
I'm 33 and I am going to have a possible hysterectomy. They aren't sure yet, but this is so helpful to know these things.

In 2 week's I'm having my fibroids and a total hysterectomy surgery. What can anyone tell me what to look forward to. And how long should I plan on being in the hospital?
Katie
Typically you are in the hospital 24 hours or less. Many go home within hours of surgery. I went home an hour after surgery.
Shawnette
You'll be there 1-3 days. But it went well for me and the most important thing is to get lots of rest after.
Sookie
Try hystersisters.com they have great information also!
Esther
Reading this way after your hysterectomy. Hope all went well. Just a few comments: I had a total laparoscopic hysterectomy (tubes, ovaries, the works). Walking was essential, given all of the carbon dioxide that got pumped into my belly. Lots of hot fluids helped too. Definitely stool softeners if taking pain meds, and that pillow helps when coughing or just moving around?
Melissa
How horrible is the pain? How long was your recovery? I’m having a hysterectomy in a few months.
Katie
The pain after surgery depends on what type of surgery you have and how invasive. Your abdomen is sore, and there is pain, but it is usually controlled by a low dose pain medication for the first few days. I used pain medication the first 3-4 days, then just ibuprofen except for a few flares when I did too much. I was up and about around my house doing little things after 2 weeks, and back to "normal" around the 4 week mark. By 8 weeks I had no real issues with being tired or sore, but I do say to take as much time off as you can, because your body will be healing internally for up to a year afterward.
Olivia
The pain is not too bad, just take you’re pain meds and don’t forget them , you will be uncomfortable it’s normal, I was in the hospital for 3 days. Always have someone with you for at least s few days .
Tina-marie
I’m 8 days post total radical hysterectomy via robotic laparoscopic method. My biggest suggestion is take gas-x immediately after surgery! My biggest hurdle thus far was the post surgery gas! Relieved oddly enough via baby Mylicon drops (all I had at the time) and the stool softener religiously. Small portion meal and tons of rest. Only complication I’ve had is numbness of bladder caused by some adhesion repair done during hysterectomy. Had previous umbilical hernia mesh adhesions that complicated things but even with that, childbirth was significantly harder to recover from for me. Of course I had two 9 1/2 lb kids 3 years apart too. Best of luck!
Randi
Hi all! I'm going to be 32 & will be getting a radal hysterectomy due to ovarian cysts & fibroids. I am not usually active due to being tired from my conditions plus hypothyroidism, which also caused me to become overweight.
I was wondering, for those of you overweight/ inactive with other ailments (pcos, thyroid, autoimmune, etc) how much pain were you in? How long was your recovery? Did survey help with weight management due to change of hormones?
Thank you for any info!
Bev
Im just 2 weeks ppost op and Ive done really well. I had a vaginal hysterectomy using laproscope..only four small cuts on the tummy. I didnt have very much pain either...i was advised to wear the white surgical knee high stockings for a few weeks. The girls from Blue Care help me with these. I can drive again. Do light jobs just to be on the safe side.
Just go for it...you'll be fine. Ps Im a fit 73 yr old.
Rebeca Johnston
I have surgery tomorrow morning. Starting to freakout a bit.
What are some foods I can eat post surgery?
Katie
You can eat anything you feel up to. However, there are two things to consider. (1) Do you tend to be nauseated post surgery? If so, you'll likely want a bland diet that won't make that worse for 1-2 days. (2) Bowel movements are tough after anesthesia, so you'll want to increase fiber and make sure you have tons of fluid intake.

I turned 39 yesterday and I'm having a hysterectomy in 13 days. I'm nervous but I don't think any recovery could be as bad as my hemorrhoidectomy !
Good luck to all the ladies and Thank you everyone for your tips and advice!
Katie
Good luck!! And yes - that is one horrible surgery!!! Lol. 🙂
Cindy
I know this was 18 months ago, but curious how your recovery was compared to your hemorrhoidectomy? I had a anal fistula repair and hemorrhoid removal in August, hysterectomy scheduled for early December. Colo-rectal surgeon said hysterectomy recovery would be EASIER than fistula/hemorrhoid surgery! I am actually looking forward to hysterectomy, to have the potential to be pain free would be wonderful.
Andrea
Hi! I’m just reading this years later but if you happen to see this, how did your anal fistula surgery go? I’m having a partial hysterectomy next month but my hubby is having the fistula surgery soon. I’m asking for him. Did it end up being worse that the hysterectomy? Any tips for that surgery? Thanks!
Karen
I just had a total abdominal hysterectomy on July 28th. I am so sore. I was in the hospital for 4 days. I've already gotten my staples removed and incision is healing well. Only thing that hurts constantly is my stomach. Make sure to keep taking the gas pills if they give them to you in the hospital as they do help with the pressure on your stomach. Find something to read or watch or do to keep your mind of the pain, especially if you are used to being in the go constantly.
Selina
Hi i will be having my surgery 5 day's after my 40th Birthday im nervus and scared.
Katie
Don't be nervous! It is a scary thing, but you can do this!!!
Kathy
Bilateral breast cancer with a double mastectomy only to turn around and have a total hysterectomy suggested in the same year. Feeling so guilty about putting folks out "again" and feeling sad about not getting back to normal. Hysterectomy honestly sounds worse than my mastectomy!
Katie
Hi Kathy,
I am so sorry you are having to go through this. Don't ever feel guilty about asking for help. It is totally understandable. A hysterectomy isn't as horrid as it sounds. Just be prepared and take it slow. You'll be back to your regular self in no time.
Kay
Hi Kathy
Sorry to hear about your surgeries. Rest assured your people love you and are willing to do anything to help you get well. All the best!
Tina
I am in the same boat! Last chemo was in January, I am just now feeling like myself! Sorta! Developed lymphodemia in my right arm, Worried my body is not ready to go through this!
May 28th is my total hysterectomy,
Hope yours went well!
I am just so tired of being sick!
Lauren
Aww. Your post made me cry. I just had hysterectomy a week ago (November 4, 2021 ) and I’m in pain and can’t wait to heal. With a lot of issues prior to my surgery for a couple of years now I know the feeling of just being tired of being tired. I know what it feels like you just want to feel well again when you wake up the next day discouraged because you’re still sick. I’m praying for you and I hope all is and went well. I understand totally.
Heather
Oh my gosh our stories are the same. Diagnosed last year @ 42, lumpectomy 10/20/2018, Bilateral Mastectomy 12/20/2018, complication, complication ,infection, more surgery (washout), complication, more surgery (implants), surgical drains for 125 days straight...now total hysterectomy Dec 10, 2019 (had to wait for enough FMLA and PTO)
I was told that because my breast cancer was ER+/PR+ that I will not be able to take any hormone replacements to help ease menopause symptoms. Have you found anything to take (non hormone) to help with that?

I am right here with you. I have my breast cancer stage three on both breast 2018 and 2019. I get my surgery today for total removal boooo
Katie
If you have already gone through menopause, then you won't have those problems again. 🙂 Good luck on your surgery and recovery!
Caroline Currier
I am having my uterus removed only. Leaving ovaries. Will I still go through hormonal issues?I have terrible pms
Katie
If you are keeping your ovaries, you are less likely to have the hormone issues. Good luck with your surgery!
Lakillia Harrell
Hello, Im 41 and getting a hysterectomy due to uterine fibroids, all the comments are very helpful and helps with my nervousness.
Toni
Hi Lakillia,
I know i'm a few years late, but how was your experience with your surgery. I too have uterine fibroids, as well as bladder displacement. I am scheduled for a hysterectomy in 45 days, and really want to hear about your pre-op, surgery, and post-op experience. Any information you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch!!!
Lori
I'm 50 and having full laparoscopic hysterectomy on Tuesday. I'm off to the store this weekend for Depends and snacks and case of bottled water. I've been told take all pain meds and rest for first 3 days walk only when using restroom We shall See how it goes. I have a personal trainer he suggested planks and an curls on pull up bar for the last month. Feel
Stronger already. Hopefully that will keep me tight after.
Katie
It sounds like you are definitely prepared! Good luck with your surgery! 🙂
Shannon H.
Hi Lori,
How are you feeling 3 weeks out? I’m 52 and having robotic assist vaginal hysterectomy on Dec 28 with a 23-hour hospital stay. I’m worried about a fibromyalgia flare up, which always happens after a surgery and slows my recovery.
Tarin
Thank you for all the helpful tips and lovely responses to the comments. I'm 35 and having a vaginal hysterectomy the 27th of this month. I've been dealing with uterine fibroids for almost two years now and I'm miserable. Some cycles I bleed heavily for 40 days and then I won't have a period for almost two months. I'm really nervous and honestly scared. I don't want to be a burden on anyone either. I have an 11yr old daughter with Down syndrome from my first marriage and it's been trying to explain to her mommy isn't going to have another baby. My DH doesn't have any kids of his own and it's been trying on him that the possibility is now thrown out the window. I hate it but at this point there's not much I can do. I honestly don't think I could safely carry again. I have suffered with chronic low back pain ever since I gave birth to my daughter. If anyone has suggestions for how to help my DD and DH I'm all ears!
Katie
Hi Tarin,
I am so sorry you have had to deal with this struggle. I know it has to be hard on you physically and emotionally. I can telly ou now that the health you will experience after your hysterectomy will be worth every second of the surgery. Prepare ahead of time with supplies, and just take it easy. After the first day or so, you won't need as much help with daily tasks. Your daughter may be able to help you some and keep you company as you lounge.
As far as the sadness about not carrying another child, it is different for each woman. I felt no real upset over it, but I already had two sons and was done. Others do have a period of mourning over this. I recommend you stay on top of your emotional situation and chat with your doctor ahead of time about having something on hand or to prescribe should it get to be too much. Don't hesitate to ask for help.
I don't have any perfect answers for helping your husband and daughter with knowing there won't be another child. But I can say that there are options out there for adopting, fostering, and just focusing more love and time on them. That doesn't make up for it, but in time, it can help make it easier. Good luck on your surgery!!
Tarin
Thank you so much Katie for your kind words and encouragement. I'm taking it one day at a time as that's all any of us can do. We have discussed the possibility of adoption later on. We know that there's always a way. I know the next weeks and possibly months will be difficult for not only me but my family as well. It's hard for outsiders to understand that someone of my age is having to go through this. They simply want to say that I'm too young or I need a second opinion. What they don't realize is that this is my second opinion and my symptoms are very real. I'm praying for strength and healing not only physically but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually for me and my family. Thank you again for these helpful insights. May God truly bless you.
Katie
Hi Tarin - it sounds like you have your head on right and are facing this with an open heart and mind. That is so important. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers in the next weeks as you move forward and begin the physical and emotional healing needed from this.
Tarin
Thank you Katie! That means so much!!
xoxo
Melissa
This has been very helpful.. I am having surgery in 2 weeks and am very nervous and somewhat emotional. thank you so much ladies. you all help comfort in a definite time of need.
Shirley
Hi Tarin,
I know it’s been awhile since your hysterectomy, and I pray that everything went well for you. I am scheduled to have a vaginal hysterectomy as well next month (due to fibroids) and was wondering if you would possibly be willing to share a little bit about how it went for you and possibly give me some tips that may help me. I am very nervous about all of it, but I am ready to be done with the almost constant bleeding and very low iron levels.
BrinaG
Hi Ladies,
I turned 45 years old on 12/1. I had a robotic laparoscopic hysterectomy leaving only my left ovary on 11/29 two days before my birthday. In 2009 I had an abdominal myomectomy to remove about 33 uterine fibroids. I can almost relate to all of you to some degree. I was not as afraid when I had the myomectomy as I was with the hysterectomy, even though the latter was less invasive. The pain was very real with both surgeries. The hardest part of the hysterectomy is not knowing what changes I'm going to experience. I'm only 12 days post op and still have bouts of pain that just come from nowhere. Nights are the hardest as insomnia seem to be my main issue. I suffered from menstrual migraines and I was hoping the surgery would lessen them but I have had a headache almost everyday. My only advice is to take each day as it comes. Do what you can when you can and accept all the help that you can get. I had no appetite the first week because the gas and pain was so excruciating that eating seemed like a task. Thankfully in week two my appetite is coming back and I'm able to eat a little bit more from one day to the next. I opted for the hysterectomy after having the fibroids return, being borderline anemic and suffering from bouts of dizziness, nausea and severe back pain throughout my menstrual cycle that cane every 21 days for 7 days. After surgery based on what my doctor found it was the best decision I could have made. I had major scarring from the previous surgery which could have eventually led to larger issues with other organs as I aged. I wish everyone luck in their journey and will be happy to share more as I continue with my recovery.
Tarin
Thank you for sharing Brina. I’m so sorry to hear how difficult this whole process has been. I too suffer from menstrual migraines and was hoping I would no longer suffer from them as well. My surgery is Wednesday and I’m starting to get anxious. I just want everything to go smoothly. I have heard ALL of the women I have spoken to say that to this day they deal with tiredness on a somewhat daily basis. All of them having the surgery in the last 5 years but some of them much older than me. I have also been told to listen to my body and not everyone around me.
Sending prayers your way Brina! Hope you are on the mend!!
Miah Owda
My hysterectomy is next Friday January 12,2018.
39 yrs old
What can I ask for or take if I'm allergic to Lortab and Percocet?
I'm feeling a little less anxious after reading the previous posts from all of you brave women.
Katie
There are tons of different pain medications available. I was given something different that didn't contain hydrocodone because it causes me issues. Just ask your physician.
Brandi
Hey ladies, I'm 37 and going in for a hysterectomy next week. I'm getting extremely nervous...My youngest is 2 and he's my little lap baby. He weighs close to 30lbs. What are the restrictions after surgery as far as lifting/carrying? And for how long? This is probably my biggest concern. Thanks for any feedback!
Katie
Usually you are limited to 10-15 pounds for 1-2 weeks, and then, 25 or less. If you have a small child, you'll want to talk to your doctor about lifting. There may be exceptions.
Dana
Hi!
I'm 35 and scheduled to have a radical hysterectomy due to early stage cervical cancer the end of February. I was just wondering if anyone else had the radical? It's a little more invasive. Just nervous and wondering about the recovery. I have a 3 year old and 5 month old...so that makes it a little more difficult to rest. My husband and family are supportive...but I still think it's going to be difficult.
Laurie
HI,
I just had a total laparoscopic vaginal hysterectomy on Monday 2/12/2018 also with the removal of my fallopian tubes and ovaries. I am just six days out and I am feeling really good but tired. I had some gas pain and pain in my shoulder right after surgery but nothing that I couldn't handle. I stayed in overnight and was released the next afternoon. I had my surgery due to fibroids, cysts on my ovaries, thickening of my uterine lining, hyperplasia and post menopausal bleeding. I'm 55 years young! You are uncomfortable for the first few days but it does get better as time goes on. I was very thankful it could be done laparoscopicaly. Much easier recovery.
Beverly Dagostino
I have my hysterectomy laproscopic robotic and staying in hospital overnight. I am so nervous and i was wondering what i need to bring with me to the hospital.
Stacy
Hi. I just had a hysterectomy two days ago. I would bring icy hot patches for your back and some type of gas be gone. Bring warm fuzzy socks and a favorite snack to take with your pain pills. I brought way to much stuff. Definitely something comfy to wear home like a t shirt dress and flip flops.
Tia
Hello I'm having a laparoscopic vaginal hysterectomy, keeping my ovaries. Does anyone have an opinion about a post surgery girdle to help with gravity & pain?
Stacy
They gave me an abdominal binder and I did not like the pressure at all
Ashley
My hysterectomy surgery is tomorrow and I'm a little nervous, I'm having it vaginally removed taking everything but the ovaries.
I've suffered from endometriosis for a few years now had one surgery last year in Jan.. And the endometriosis came back . Hoping after this surgery I will finally be healed of this horrible disease.
Thanks to all the brave women who have commented to help us fixing to go through this. Prayers to you all.
Katie
Good luck on your surgery tomorrow! You will feel so much better after the fact!
Stacy
I was told that keeping your ovaries or just an ovary does not get rid of endo forever. They said that your ovary still produces the hormone for endometriosis. I too kept an ovary so I wouldn’t go through menopause
Karen
Hi, I’m having hysterectomy in 2 weeks, they are leaving my ovaries but taking everything else. They are also doing reconstructive surgery as well, so I’ll have stitches as well in other places. I’m 42, and have had 4 children. The reason for this is due to constant bleeding and everything pretty much falling out.
I’m very anxious, and scared, 6 weeks recovery, this is all happening during me just going through a divorce after 22 years, and in the middle of moving.
Katie
You will feel so much better than you have in years! I will keep you in my thoughts during this time.
Margaret
Hey Karen,
How did you go with your surgery? We are similar in our circumstances but I’m a little older. I’ll be 47 later this year. I’m a nervous wreck. Having a vaginal hysterectomy and pelvic prolapse repair posterior and anterior. Would love to know any tips you have too.
Anita
Hi Margaret,
I’m having the same surgery you listed on Monday. How did it go for you? How long did you have pain? I’ll be 51 in a few weeks.
MRiss
I had an abdominal hysterectomy 2 days ago, after having several surgeries in the past to remove fibroids. He took the tubes and left the ovaries. It was the extreme hemmorarrging I've been experiencing that prompted me to get it done.
Its been extremely painful with the incision site (sitting up, coughing, laughing is excruciating) its stapled right now but I'm just trying to pass gas and have a bowel movement.
The pain meds have added to the constipation I think, but I can't not take them. I learned that the anesthesia puts your organs to sleep as well, which is why is takes time to have bms. I'm going to try a stool softener and see if that helps.
It was such a relief when I passed gas last night. This surgery is no joke.

I am week 3 post surgery from my abdominal hysterectomy, mine was due to an extremely large and aggressive fibriod measuring 26.5 cm. The fibrillation was growing behind my uterus, as a result of its size it prolapsed my bladder and bowels and was causing damage to my right kidney.
There were complications and 1 litre of loss blood, hemoglobin are low as is my blood pressure is very low, my surgeon made it clear that for the next 90 days I need to take it easy only allowed walks and taking my time, with long rest periods. Week 3 my abdomen is still very sore and swollen, the incision hurts
What I am find during recovery is I get winded quite easily, a pregnancy pillow is a life saver, in terms of comfort during the night and protection. Electric heating pad is also important the heat seems to ease the pain. Also a 3 legged cane to get out of bed.
Pain medication was giving me the worse kind of dreams, not to mention constipation, but so are the iron pills I need to be on for the next 3 months. Doctor recommended taking the iron pills with pill form laxative it has helped, you need to be on top of the pain as it can hinder your recovery.
Also fluids extremely important I switch between G2 and water helps with the blood pressure and hemoglobins, I found bananas hard on my belly but everyone is different the next important thing is bio oil it helps with the scar.
I hope all you ladies recovery quickly

Amanda B.
I am having a TLH on July 26th removing every thing but keeping ovaries. I am 32 and also wondering about sex life after.
Katie
It really depends on your existing sex life and your partner. If things are good now, then after surgery they can remain the same. Your libido may go up or down, but you can communicate with your partner and work around it.

Hello I am 32 and 3 days post op for laparoscopic assisted hysterectomy, they took everything except my ovaries. I have been having a very hard time with gas and not having a bowel movement.. I've been taking Phillips MOM and drinking peppermint tea, I walk for about an hour a day and only take pain meds to help me sleep at night. Any suggestions would be helpful, my stomach is very large and hard from the pressure.
Katie
Smooth Move Tea is a great option. Lots of fruits and veggies, and plenty of water!

My surgery is tomorrow! So nervous but ready! Your suggestions are all so helpful!

How are you doing? Mine is 12/06 - nervous but so ready as well!

My mom is having this surgery tomorrow, so I am typing to help her get ready. This article was very helpful, so thank you very much. 🙂
Katie
Yes! Throat lozenges are also helpful in the first few hours after surgery! Good luck in your recovery!

I am 43 and am booked in for the 13th of Feb 2019 for a total laparascopic hysterectomy due to pain and flooding periods. They are taking my tubes but keeping my ovaries if they can (polycystic ovarian disease and already had ovarian drilling plus ovarian wedge resection on them to fall pregnant). A second surgeon will be repairing my umbilical hernia at the same time, so a double whammy of surgery, but I am so thankful the hospital is able to do it that way instead of 2 separate operations and healing times. So nervous but also looking forward to it so I can recover and be rid of all the pain and bleeding!

Hi Christine, my surgery is scheduled for Feb 5 (five days from today) I only just found these hysterectomy-related posts, and they are so much more informative than anything else I have encountered! Even though I wish I had had the information sooner, it is good to have a few days to prepare with OTC products and whatnot. Hoping your surgery goes well.

You have just told my story! How are you doing?

Hi ladies,
I'm 24 years old.
On april 19 (in 12 days) I go in for a hysterectomy. They are taking everything except my ovaries.
My nerves are definitely going.
What are some necessities that you all needed?
I already ordered the belly band..
I'm reading so many different things and I would really appreciate some insight from other women who have gone through this.
Thank you all!!!
Katie
Hi! I am sorry you have to go through this, but I hope that you will feel better after the surgery. Make sure you stay very well hydrated. A stool softener is a must for at least the first week after surgery. You do not want to strain at all. Having someone there to help you get up and down for the first couple of days helps, and definitely, don't do any chores/cleaning until your doctor clears you. The internal stitches can bust easily, so you have to let your body heal before you take on much. The belly band helps some, and loose comfy clothing for a few weeks makes it less uncomfortable. GasX is a good product to have on hand, and walking as much as you feel able for the first few days helps your body move the gas out that they use during surgery.

I’m having a total hysterectomy taking everything including ovaries on May 3rd. I’m 50 years old and pretty nervous about both the surgery and recovery. These comments have been very helpful.

I'm 83 with endometrial uterine cancer and having laparascopic hysterectomy with even my cervix removed in three days.. Trying to stay serene. Lots of prayer. Worried that my umbilical hernia is going to suffer from the inflation with gas. Will ask for a binder at hospital. My doctor says I am the most informed and prepared patient she has ever had....lots of on-line researching. I hope all this info I have gathered helps. Thank you for this site and all the comments and tips. The one thing I am going to miss doing for awhile is my Yoga class three times a week!

Patria Spears,
I hope your surgery went well.
I’m in the same boat as you. I’m 67 with endometrial cancer and feeling scared. Having robotic laparoscopic hysterectomy. I’ve read all the comments and getting items to be prepared for after surgery recovery. Thanks for all the tips and stories on everyone’s individual experience.

I thought I'd find out if this page is still active. I am new to this page. I turned 46 July 22, 2 days after wards I am told "the best way to take care of your fibroid tumors is a Hysterectomy, would you like to be placed on the September operation schedule?" It really started to hit me that afternoon and the next several days that I wouldn't be having children naturally, if I were married. I have spent a couple of hours through the last several days looking up information about Hysterectomies, as I was told this would be the best procedure to go with concerning my fibroid tumors ( I do not yet know when surgery date is, possibly September). Interesting, I wasn't given any information about what would be taking place minus the incision and what would be taken out, as long as ovaries and such looked fine after I am opened up. As I come across different websites, that lead to different websites, I started seeing sites for what is suggested to have with you when you are discharged. I have seen the "hystersisters" website, so far to me the Mayo Clinic website is the best for information that I have seen. There wasn't talk of medication to be prescribed for hormones unless the ovaries were taken as well. I think I was told by the doctor I saw, I would be discharged the next day. This is my first surgery. What are the necessities to place in an overnight bag? What should I look to be wearing for the next month after wards?
Sue
Having hysterectomy soon.
Did anyone need a walker, grabber, toilet hand hold bars, over the bed rolling table, wedgie pillow for staying in bed, mattress protectors for post-op?
Thank You for all this information!

I am 45 and just had a hysterectomy 12/21/21 right before Christmas. I was so desperate to get a solution to my heavy and painful monthly periods due to huge fibroids that I did not care to missed Christmas dinner this last year. Every single one of your recommendations it's right on point. The only thing I did't think of getting was the depend. I did't get a laparoscopic surgery, I had a huge surgery just like a c-section. I am doing better now but being prepare is the key to an easy fast recovery. Best of luck on your surgery if it has not happened yet. Looks like you have everything under control.

Nance,
I’m also having partial hysterectomy, vaginal prolapse fixed, and a bladder mesh. How did it go for you you? Im so excited to have my surgery in November so I can start having a normal life again. My periods are debilitating and the prolapse is so awful. I’m more excited than nervous actually. I hope you’re feeling better. Let me know any tips you have, if you can.
Thanks! Andrea
